Miu Miu began life in 1993 when Miuccia Prada decided the time was right to launch a sister label to Prada. Named after her family’s childhood nickname for her Miucca’s diffusion line was more youthful (and cheaper) than the mainline label. The label’s first collection was for SS94; cowgirl-themed and experimental it was the starting block to Miu Miu becoming one of the most successful sister brands of any fashion label.
The AW95 Miu Miu collection used Drew Barrymore in its adverts. Dresses came in a selection of silky pastel colours, paired with matching coats, clutch bags and kitten heels. Already Miu Miu was being recognized as not just a ‘watered down’ version of Prada, but as a label in its own right.
For Spring/Summer 1996 the Miu Miu collection showed a more sophisticated spirit. Simple beige Miu Miu dresses with empire line cuts were worn with clunky sandals.
Miu Miu’s Spring/Summer 1998 collection featured dresses with cut out lace animals on the skirts, red strapless dresses and tight red leather Miu Miu dresses. The look was sultry with a cute edge and dresses were delicate and feminine but had what was becoming the signature Miu Miu insolence alongside their innocence.
For AW00 Miu Miu dresses were printed with a mix of patterns but the look remained effortless. Many dresses in the collection were skimpy but were given a masculine edge when worn with a boyish hat and a big Miu Miu bag.
AW01’s collection featured a huge array of Miu Miu dresses. The runway presentation began with darkly hued, sheer dresses made innocent with Mary-Jane shoes and thick Miu Miu tights. The dresses then became more ‘classic’ with pink, brown, red and beige coloured dresses in minimalist cuts.
Spring 2002 had long gypsy style Miu Miu dresses, tiered with Moroccan inspired prints. The look was romantic, but teaming the dresses with boyish blazers made the collection both womanly and androgynous.
For SS03 the Miu Miu collection was filled with fresh, floral prints andcleanly cut cut white dresses. There were obvious elements of Japan with subtle hints of Hawaii and California. Some dresses had a kimono cut; made from silky Japanese prints and others were flirty baby-doll styles in innocent white. The flower printed dresses were worn with snakeskin printed Miu Miu heels and some with oversize Miu Miu sweaters.
AW04’s collection centered around accessories and the layering; the feel was ‘librarian chic’ but with a subtle sensuality. The end of the collection had long sheer dresses with Miu Miu belts cinching the waists.
Miu Miu’s Autumn/Winter 2005 collection had lashings of black lace, black fur and patchwork. Many dresses were lingerie inspired and others had warm tones and flower-patterned prints.
Spring 2006’s Miu Miu collection had a quirky, cartoon feel with flashes of starbursts teamed with art deco style Miu Miu shoes. Dresses were wide in range. Among them were star print Miu Miu dresses worn with white sunglasses, simple white cotton dresses and leather dresses in various styles.
For SS07 there was an array of constructivism, with silky two tone Miu Miu dresses featuring bold shoulders and tiny round collars. Some dresses were short with a small, box pleated Miu Miu skirts and the same rounded collar in contrasting colours.
For AW08 there were hooded jumpers, dresses and tops featuring each model’s embroidered monogram. The dresses themselves were jockey inspired whilst others were darker in feel with black lace and cut out patterns.
The Spring/Summer 2009 collection had black Miu Miu dresses with sashed waists and elegant dresses in luxurious reds and camels. Some fabrics were dotted with fraying holes and others had prints resembling painted Roman tiles. The collection also had lots of pleats and rusty colours.
For AW10 there was a 1960s Mary Quant. There were girly metallic flowers and petals alongside at sensual dark tones and flashes of flesh. Some Miu Miu dresses had little collar, others had roll-necks with bows. All dresses were paired with metal kitten Miu Miu heels and quite were worn with fluffy Miu Miu legwarmers.
The Spring 2010 collection was inspired by Hollywood and people’s obsession with being famous. Miu Miu dresses were mostly in bright neon colours, worn with a skinny belt and sometimes a leather jacket in silver or gold. Many patterns featured also, dresses were oriented with stars and flowers in abstract forms.
