Legendary couturier Christóbal Balenciaga is undoubtedly one of fashion’s most important figures. A legend in his own lifetime and a contemporary of fashion greats Chanel and Dior, the latter describing Balenciaga as "the master of us all”. Famous for his bubble shapes and oddly shaped ultramodern cuts, his groundbreaking manipulation of the waistline culminated in a new silhouette and defined a generation’s style in the swinging sixties.
Under Nicolas Ghesquière the atelier has once again become the darling of the fashion press with Balenciaga handbags leading the way in covetable arm candy.
Balenciaga was the king of dissymmetry, the perfect geometrician, his unflinching perfectionism has been recreated and modernised under Ghesquière’s creative direction.
"Women did not have to be perfect or even beautiful to wear his clothes. His clothes made them beautiful".
In November 2012 it was announced that Alexander Wang would replace Nicolas Ghesquière as next creative director of Balenciaga.
