I have mentioned before I am sure what a HUGE Chalayan fan I am. I went to his retrospective at the Design Museum three times. His cerebral attitude to design, his articulate delivery and his ability to turn his hand to so many art forms outside of fashion combine to keep him on my top fashion designers list. If I could grown my feet a couple of sizes I’d be wearing these right now.
Lesson 17 – Hussein Chalayan Padded Boots
Chlayan’s Fall 2009 collection, which he called ‘Earthbound’ was inspired by the urban aspect of London. The feel was both sculptural and minimal. The colour palette was muted grey and blacks. Hips and shoulders were rounded and padded….and so were feet.
There is something a little disconcerting about these. They have an almost prosthetic feel with that large padded panel on the front. I cannot help thinking of Alexander McQueen’s SS10 ‘Armadillo’ shoes which also look as though they were absorbing the wearer’s body in some way, working against it, not with it.
They also have something animalistic about them. Rhino-esque. Not a word I use often but I think it fits here.
